GREENSBORO -- It's a celebration two centuries in the making.
The city of Greensboro is officially 200 years old and the commemoration of the Gate City's bicentennial wrapped up Saturday with a birthday party and parade of the decades with people dressed up to represent all of the years of Greensboro's 200-year history.
Crowds lined the streets for the big event, including the Jacobs family, who moved to the area two years ago.
"We love living here,” Jennifer Jacobs said. “It's a great place to raise a family."
Greensboro's 200th birthday cake makes its way down the parade route.
Greensboro officially became a city on May 17, 1808. After the parade, people gathered in Center City Park for birthday cake and to sing “Happy Birthday.”
"It was a huge undertaking and an ambitious undertaking but we've had some great volunteers and some great participation by our sponsors and community members so it has just gone very well," bicentennial organizer Zana Wall-Rogers said.
And local residents are thrilled to be part of such a big event in the city's history.
"Each neighborhood has had an opportunity to come up with its own way to celebrate,” said Jacobs. “Our neighborhood had an ice cream social so it's nice that they spread it out so if you couldn't be there for one you could be there for another event."
While Saturday marked the final day of the Greensboro bicentennial, there will still be other events to mark the occasion throughout the summer.
