Heather Higgins book -- "The Foal That Doesn't Have a Family."
GREENSBORO -- Heather Higgins, 12, spent years of her life in foster care but was adopted when she was eight. She is autistic, but that didn't stop her from taking her experiences in foster care to write and illustrate a children's book.
"It's based on how I felt when I was in foster care and when I was adopted," she explained.
Her book "The Foal That Doesn't Have a Family" is now sold at bookstores nationwide. Part of the proceeds goes to The Children's Home Society of North Carolina.
"To teach kids that have no families that it's ok... to show them that it's not really scary," Higgins said in regards to why she wrote the book.
On Thursday, the group held a tea party for Higgins and four other kids who have gone out of the way to help children in foster care.
The Children's Home Society holds a dinner every year to thank donors, but this is the first year they had the tea party for young donors.
"They've done a variety of things to help support that mission. Raising money through collecting change, having lemonade sales, and even having birthday parties and donating all their gifts to children at The Children's Home Society," Tonya Hayes, the Triad director of The Children's Home Society said.
Higgins says she is very happy her book is helping kids just like her. But as for her career as an author, she has other things in mind.
"I'm not really dreaming of writing more books when I'm older. I'm actually dreaming of being a cowgirl."
