News 14 Carolina is local news on your schedule through teamwork and technology.
The team
The News 14 Carolina team brings you more news every day than any other local news channel in North Carolina.
When you watch News 14 Carolina, you see reporters and anchors. But while these jobs are important, they’re part of a bigger team, the team you don’t see. That team includes photographers, editors, producers, master control operators and engineers. Over 130 people work here and every job is important, each one, an integral part of providing continuously updated local news, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
Weather on the Ones
24 hours a day, 7 days a week, every 10 minutes, and during severe weather, as long as it takes. That’s the job of the Weather on the Ones team.
It’s not an easy job to forecast weather in North Carolina. That’s why it’s so important to have the latest technology.
At the Weather on the Ones Forecast Centers in Raleigh and Charlotte, you’ll find computer, satellite and radar technology, with direct links to the National Weather Service and weather stations across North Carolina. Take these tools, combined with the experience of eight full-time meteorologists, and you get the best local weather coverage in North Carolina.
The technology
News 14 Carolina is a technical marvel, a masterpiece of hardware and software integration. Welcome to the world of digital television.
This is one of the most technologically advanced newsrooms in the country. The news stories you see are edited on computers. The footage is all stored on hard drives and are all networked together and accessible throughout the building. Even the live reports are digital in nature, assuring the highest quality. There are backups upon backups to assure Time Warner Cable customers continue to receive the latest local news and weather 24/7.
But as impressive as all this digital hardware is, it’s simply another tool News 14 Carolina uses to deliver the stories you care about. To do that, we turn to one of the oldest inventions known to man…
The wheel
The wheel is News 14 Carolina’s format. Think of it as a clock that never stops. As the hands turn, news stories play, and as new reports come in, they are inserted into the wheel.
If the heart of News 14 Carolina’s technology is the digital hardware, the brain is a system called ENPS, or Electronic News Production System.
ENPS was developed by the Associated Press. It’s the tool used to manage the news content of News 14 Carolina. All of the day’s stories are lined up. They can be rearranged or updated as time goes by. The system also allows for instant insertion of live events for breaking news or severe weather coverage.
The wheel keeps turning, day after day with local news, local weather, and…
Local sports
News 14 Carolina leads the way in local sports coverage and there’s plenty of sports to cover in North Carolina including racing, pro football, basketball, hockey, and some of the greatest college rivalries in the country. News 14 Carolina covers it all with sports updates throughout the day and on Sports Night, the area’s only local half-hour sports show every night at 10.
